Collegiate Council Gaining a Network
Collegiate Council Gaining a Network Collegiate Council Gaining a Network Collegiate Council Gaining a NetworkA major obstacle for most Engineering graduates is getting experience which sets them apart from their peers for a particular career path. Early opportunity to network and be mentored in a specialized field is usually what helps some avoid this predicament. A remarkable example of this opportunity is joining ASME Petroleum Divisions Collegiate Council. If you are an undergraduate or graduate student looking to get involved with the Oil and Gas industry, the Collegiate Council offers this kind of experience.I caught up with some of the Collegiate Councils 2014-2015 alumni to talk about how their graduate work, undergraduate experience, and career path in the petroleum industry has been impacted by being a part of the Collegiate Council.Hsu Lee (Left) working with Professor Mohammed (Right) at the University of CalgaryHsu Lee is a doctoral student at the University of Calgary, who heard of the Collegiate Council through his professor. Even though Hsus main reason for applying welches to network, he discovered that there were other facets to the council experience which he benefitted from. Such as tours of companies like Technip. He says, the most memorable part of this was that, they amazed us by demonstrating and explaining the complexity of subsea systems with intricate 3D physical models.Hsus responsibilities as a graduate student have been supplemented by information gained through joining the council. Before joining, Hsus research used sophisticated and complex ways of solving problems which was thought to bring recognition by the scientific community. However, he learned that professionals in industry, who used these solutions, wanted simplicity. Hsu says, The council had changed the way I conduct my research, where I now try to find a balance between academic recognition and the complexity level of the solution to narrow the gap between academia an d industry. In addition, Hsu teaches undergraduate courses at his university. Hsu explains that he is, actually working on revamping an undergraduate course (Fuel Science and Technology) at my university with the knowledge and experience gained through the council.Russell LocettaFor good contrast, Russell Locetta, a mechanical engineering undergraduate from the University of Arkansas, learned about the Collegiate Council by doing research on ASME. As I researched, I noticed the many divisions of ASME, cover every facet of what mechanical engineers can do after completing their degrees, Russell says. Since he had prior interest and experience in the Oil and Gas industry the Petroleum Divisions council was a perfect fit. After becoming a council member, Russel recognized that a main takeaway of the council was mentorship. Our mentors represented a variety of different sectors of our crucial industry, and their combined experience further reinforced our existing passions for the petrole um industry, Russell explains. With such mentorship, the councils activity influenced Russell to seek leadership opportunities. Russel began by engaging his universitys faculty which followed by being named, Oil and Gas Student Coordinator, he explained. He was later elected as the director of the Collegiate Council which gave Russell the opportunity to lead others in various time zones. In regards to plans for the 2015-2016 school year Russell says, There are events already in the works to bring students together and increase ASMEs footprint both at my university and throughout the US.Lastly is the alumna Juan Bastardo, an intern for British Petroleum (BP) and graduate of Texas AM University. Juan joined the Collegiate Council after hearing about it from his fellow officers at his universitys ASME section. Using site tours and interacting with professionals as examples, Juan tells us that, the council really provided me the tools I needed to expand my knowledge of the industry to g auge how I could see myself fit in the big picture.Juan BastardoWithin BP, Juan has been able to apply the lessons learned from the council. As of late, he works as a Drilling Engineer in the Gulf of Mexico. The council helped me hone in on what group I wanted to support within the company and what kind of information I needed to familiarize myself with to be successful, Juan explains. The understanding of his field has paid off dividends for Juan. He says, This made the transition into this position smoother for me and I felt mora prepared coming in than I would have if I had not received exposure to the collegiate council. From academic and professional perspectives Hsu, Russell, and Juan each benefited from joining the exclusive council. Whether one is researching, teaching, administrating, or working the opportunities afforded by ASME Petroleum Divisions Collegiate Council can be applied across the board. Please visit the Petroleum Divisions Collegiate Council website to learn mor e about the council and how to apply. For more information also contact Javanni Kiezer. The council is limited to 15 seats.

United States Marine Corps Commissioning Programs
United States seestreitkraft Corps Commissioning ProgramsUnited States seestreitmacht Corps Commissioning ProgramsThere are several ways to gain a commission in the United States kriegsmarine Corps, whether one is currently enlisted or a civilian college student/graduate. For those seestreitmacht Officers not attending the U.S. Naval Academy, the road to a commission as a lieutenant in the Corps begins with one of several programs at Officer Candidates School The Officer Candidates Class, the Platoon Leaders Course, or the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps. Each course is a screening process, with the mission to motivate, train, evaluate, and screen potential officers. Basic Qualifications There is no longer a specific officer candidate academic test for Marine Corps Officer applicants. Those wishing to apply for a commission in the Marine Corps must achieve one of the following minimums Combined score of 1000 on the verbal and math sections of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SA T)Combined math and verbal score of 45 on the American College Test (ACT)120 (can be waivered to 115) on the Marine Corps EL composite score of the ASVAB Aviation officer applicants must also take the Navy and Marine Corps Aviation Selection Test Battery. Other minimum qualification requirements include Minimum of a Bachelors Degree (upon commissioning)Must be a United States CitizenAge Between 18 and 28 (no older than age 30 for current enlisted)Must Meet Normal Accession Medical StandardsMust be Eligible for a Security Clearance (either SECRET or TOP SECRET, depending on the job assignment)High Moral Character. Applicants convicted of any felony or misdemeanor involving moral turpitude are rejected. History of addiction to any narcotic, illegal drug, or alcohol is disqualifying. The United States Naval Academy A percentage of each class at the U.S. Naval Academy receives a commission in the Marine Corps through a selection process. The academy offers a bachelor of science degr ee and reserve commission as second lieutenant to graduates. Academy candidates should begin their nomination request during their junior year in high school. Officer Candidate Course Under the officer candidate programs, male and female graduates of an accredited four-year college or university, and graduates of accredited law schools licensed to practice in a state or federal court are eligible for a reserve commission. Upon successful completion of a 10-week screening and evaluation program, candidates are commissioned as second lieutenants in the Marine Corps Reserve. Even though graduates receive a Reserve commission, graduation and acceptance of a commission incurs a minimum active duty (full time) service commitment. Upon completion of this program and commissioning, second lieutenants are assigned to The Basic School at Quantico, VA, for 26 weeks of officer training. After completing The Basic School, aviation officers undergo flight instruction for an additional 18 to 2 4 months, while ground officers attend specialty schools of varying lengths. Ground officers have an active duty obligation of three and one-half years after commissioning. Pilots have an active duty obligation of six years if trained as a helicopter or fixed-wing turboprop aircraft pilot and eight years if trained as a jet pilot. Naval flight officers (NFOs) have an active duty obligation of six years. Aviation candidates must be at least 20 years old upon entering the program and no older than 27 upon commissioning. Ground officers must be less than 28 years old upon commissioning. Platoon Leaders Class Marine Platoon Leaders Classis available to full-time enrolled, physically qualified male and female undergraduate freshmen, sophomoras, andjuniors attending accredited colleges. Pre-commissioning training consists of two six-week sessions or one 10-week session during summer breaks at the Marine Corps Combat Development Command in Quantico, VA. PLC students may choose ground, aviation, or law contracts, and may apply for financial subsistence allowance of $250 a month upon completion of one summer training session. Aviation students may join the Flight Indoctrination Program and receive civilian flight instruction during their senior year of college. PLC members may also apply for theMarine Corps Tuition Assistance Programand receive as much as $5,200 per year for tuition assistance. Upon graduation from college, PLC participants receive reserve commissions as second lieutenants. Officers are then assigned to The Basic School at Quantico, VA for 26 weeks of basic officer training. Students opting for ground or law training must be at least 17 years old upon entering the program and less than 28 upon commissioning. Pilot candidates must be at least 17 upon entering the program and less than 27 upon commissioning. Aviation may be guaranteed to freshmen if qualified. Minimum active duty obligation for ground officers and lawyersfollowing commissioning is th ree and one-half years. Following flight training and designation as a naval aviator, the minimum active duty obligation is six years if trained as ahelicopter pilotor naval flight officer and eight years if trained as a fixed-wing pilot. Minimum active duty requirements are extended six months for receiving financial subsistence allowance and 18 months for receiving tuition assistance. Navy/Marine Corps ROTC Navy/Marine Corps ROTC programs at more than 65 colleges and universities across the country offer Marine Corps commissions to college students who complete four years of naval science study on campus. The two types of programs are the College Program and the Scholarship Program. In addition to students already enrolled in college programs, or planning to attend college, some enlisted personnelareeligible to apply for a Navy/Marine Corps ROTC Scholarship. Four-year scholarship program. Students are selected from a national competition and are appointed midshipmen, U.S. Nava l Reserve, and identified as Marine Corps options. They may be granted the compensation and benefits authorized by law during the Basic Course for a total period of not more than four years. During this period of college, theDepartment of the Navypays tuition, fees, andtextbooks, and provides uniforms and a subsistence allowance of up to $400 for each academic month. Upon completion of naval science requirements and graduation, students receive reserve commissions as a second lieutenant with a four-year active duty obligation. Four-year college program. Students are selected from among those applying for enrollment at each Navy/Marine Corps ROTC unit. During the first two years in the Basic Course, students have the status of civilians who have entered into a contract with the Navy. Upon completion of one term of The Basic Course, students may apply for a change to a Marine Corps option. Upon enrollment in the Advanced Course,College Programstudents enlist in the Marine Corps Reserv e. Upon graduation and completion of naval science requirements, students are commissioned as second lieutenants in the Marine Corps Reserve with a three-and-one-half-year active duty obligation. The Navy provides uniforms, naval science textbooks, and up to $400 for each academic month for a maximum of 20 months during the Advanced Course. Three-, two-, and one-year scholarships are available to College Program students nominated by their NROTC unit commanding officers. The Commandant of the Marine Corps makes those selections. Two-year scholarship and college programs. Students selected are those with advanced college standing who qualify for enrollment in the Advanced Course. They must first complete the six-week course at the Naval Science Institute. Those enrolled in the two-year scholarship and college programs have the same privileges and obligations as those in the respectivefour-yearprograms. Commissioning Programs for Current Enlisted The U.S. Naval Academy Preparatory School. The Preparatory School, located at Newport, RI, accepts applications from active duty and inactive reserve enlisted members of the Marine Corps. The Naval Academy admissions board considers applicants for the Naval Academy Preparatory School. The applicationis made to theNaval Academy. If someone is not selected for admission to the academy, they could be selected for the Naval Academy Preparatory School. Entrance requirements are based on the whole person evaluation of overall abilities andpotential, and are similar to those of other prep schools. Broadened Opportunity for Officer Selection and Training (BOOST). BOOST offers active duty enlisted men and women between the ages of 18 and 24 the opportunity to receive 10 months of extensive academic preparation to become more competitive for selection to the Naval Academy,Marine Corps Enlisted Commissioning Education Programand Navy/Marine Corps ROTC scholarship programs. BOOST participants attend school at the Naval Education Training Center in Newport, RI, If not selected for either a Navy/Marine Corps ROTC scholarship, MECEP, or appointment to the Naval Academy, BOOST students fulfill their service obligation to the Marine Corps in the enlisted ranks. Enlisted Commissioning Program (ECP). ECP provides enlisted Marines with a four-year degree from an accredited school the opportunity to become commissioned officers. ECP is open to Marines with a minimum of one year active duty experience and at least 12 months remaining on their currentenlistment contract. This program provides selected enlisted Marines, ages 20 to 26, with an opportunity to earn a baccalaureate degree by attending a college or university full-time. After obtaining a degree and completing officer candidate school, MECEP graduates arecommissioned asreserve second lieutenants, provided they are no older than 30. Meritorious Commissioning Program. MCP provides a commissioning opportunity for enlisted Marines with two-year degrees, 75 semes ter hours or more of college work, which have demonstrated rare leadership qualities, and would ultimately better serve the Marine Corps as an officer. Unlike other commissioning programs where the applicant initiates the application process, MCP requires that applicants be nominated by their commanding officers. Marines must have the same basic qualifications for MCP as ECP. Marines are given a reserve commission and serve on active duty.

This magic bullet email can land you a job
This magic bullet email can land you a jobThis magic bullet email can land you a jobThis e-mail is a magic bullet. It follows a very specific format and will get you a meeting that will lead to yur new job. The catch is, you need to actually have done the work to support the claims you make in this e- mail for it to succeed, and that takes a lot of effort.Consider this as a road map. If you do the work necessary to write this e-mail, you will get a meeting and a job.Companies get hundreds of resumes full of real skills but no mission they also get job applicants bursting with a personal mission who have no skills. This e-mail works because it proves that you have both. Here are the four paragraphs necessary for this e-mail to work1. Prove three ways that you have a real skill.Companies need people with real skills. Choose a skill that you know the company needs, based on all the research you have done in your company brief (78). Companies need people with skills that are directly app licable to the real jobs they need done, like account-ing, project management, and design. Soft skills like leadership and willingness to learn dont count. If you dont immediately know how to prove that you have the skills they need, try the following exercises make a list of your skills (69), make a list of what you want to learn (72), and take a course outside of school (82).2. Prove three ways that you are mission-aligned.You must prove that you are committed to the mission of the company with tangible examples. Whether its through the extensive interviews you have done with leaders in the field (115), sharing the results of a line of inquiry (90), or the volunteer experience that you did five years ago, show what you have done. You need to prove that you are mission-aligned, and that means much more than a one-liner at the top of a resume template.3. Say that you were going to do it yourself, but you can create a deeper impact by working with their company.Tell them that you have been thinking, researching, and beginning to work in this field and then you found their company. Tell them that you realized their company is doing the saatkorn work or research that you had begun to do by yourself and how much more you could do if you worked together with them.4. Request an opportunity to talk. Finally, in the last paragraph, ask for the opportunity to talk, get advice, and learn about how you can work together. Close the e-mail with a simple request. Always approach this request as though you are already doing this work. In the meeting itself, all you need to do is iterate the ways that you have mission alignment and employable skills, and tell them that you want to find a role within their company where you can put all of this into action to bring the company value. It is rare that someone has put in the effort to make the claims youre making in this e-mail. Youll stand out from the crowd, and youre guaranteed to get a meeting.Disclaimer This e-mail takes a trem endous amount of work to ensure that it is authentic and effective. You have to commit to building and strengthening real skills and to becoming mission- aligned so that its impossible to fake. If you are short on either mission or skills, employers will be able to tell and the e-mail wont work. There is a pathway to get a job with the company that you want to work for, and this e-mail is one of the final steps. This is just a template, so treat it as a roughly hewn guide. Each e-mail you write should be unique and reflect the specific mission and purpose of the company. There are thousands of stories any one of us can tell of our experiences. The employer wont do the work to understand your story, but you can, and, with any luck, the employer will not only notice, but hire you because of it.Reprinted from 50 Ways to Get a Job An Unconventional Guide to Finding Work on Your Terms by arrangement with TarcherPerigee, an imprint of Penguin Publishing Group, a division of Penguin Random House LLC. What its Like to Be the First Pregnant Woman at a Startup
What its Like to Be the First Pregnant Woman at a StartupWhat its Like to Be the First Pregnant Woman at a StartupIn January 2012, after weeks of resume updating, cover letter writing, and interviewing, I received two job offers one from a big name technology company where the work wouldnt be that interesting but the pay and benefits would be steady, and one from a scrappy startup where the work would be cutting-edge but the compensation less than guaranteed. I chose to go with the startup. The choice welchesnt an easy one. My husband and I had just started talking about beginning our family, and startups are known for long hours and intense work. I even voiced my concern to the CEO, who said, after a long pause, It would suck if you just, like, up and left for nine months. Not an encouraging start. But I chose the company anyway, because I thought the work would be more fun and worthwhile. When I first started, I was one of about 15 employees. We had no HR staff or personnel policies whatsoever. There was no definition of sick leave. (We were largely just asked leid to bring any infectious diseases to the office.) The ambiguous company hierarchy and policies didnt worry me- until two months in, when I found out I was pregnant. I definitely hadnt planned on getting pregnant that soon, but thats the funny thing about pregnancy It very rarely happens when you plan it.Initially, the idea of being the first (and only) pregnant lady at a startup company was terrifying. Not only do startups have a lack of policies and guidelines, the culture typically encourages working long hours at odd times of the day. I remember worrying about my perception in the company as I took time to attend doctors appointments and dealt with the inevitable exhaustion (and sometimes nausea) pregnancy brings. After my son was born, and I went back to work four months later, I realized some of my fears were unfounded. There were even some unexpected benefits to being pregnant at a startup that I dont think you would find at traditional companies. Of course, there were the downsides, too- as I learned two months later when I experienced one of the most disheartening realities of working at a startup and was laid off. But, I survived. My son is now one year old, and during that time Ive conquered maternity leave, breast feeding, post-partum-ness, being laid off, and job searching. After some reflection, I compiled the following tidbits of advice for any other moms and moms-to-be in similar situations. Announcing Your PregnancyAfter I found out I was pregnant, I immediately started to worry about when and how I should announce it to my co-workers. Like all things related to pregnancy, there are a host of different opinions on the matter. Several sources recommended that I wait until four or five months (or whenever I was becoming leidiceably pregnant), their rationale being that Id have the chance to prove that my pregnancy wouldnt negatively affect my productivity. However , one caveat to this plan is if you have seriously troubling morning sickness. Obviously, if you can barely pull yourself out of bed in the morning and cant stray farther than a certain distance from the bathroom, then you are elend going to be able to put in a full days work. In this scenario, you will have to announce your pregnancy to your manager so you can take the time you need. (In some cases, you can use some of your short-term disability leave to cover the time you take off.)I told my manager I was pregnant when I was roughly three and a half months along. She then informed the higher-ups at the company shortly after that. I waited a few more weeks before I made a general (but informal) announcement to the rest of the company. I found that telling my manager first before I told anyone else worked very well. It meant that she wasnt surprised by my company-wide announcement, and it gave us both a chance to strategize how we were going to make this whole pregnant-and-working-h ard thing work.Getting What You NeedWhen you are pregnant, you are going to need a few accommodations. You are going to need to have time to attend doctors appointments, you might need to schedule some work-from-home days to help battle the worst of morning sickness and exhaustion woes, and when you return to work you will likely need time and space to breast pump a few times during the day. And as the first pregnant woman at a company, you have to be the one who thinks of all of the details and finds solutions. The best way to handle getting what you need is by being assertive and proactive. For example, make it clear that you are not going to sit in a bathroom stall to breast pump, but also make it clear that you are willing to scope out places to use as a lactation room and be flexible with finding the right solution. By taking this approach, you are making sure you get what you need while also communicating to your manager and co-workers that you are committed to making your new working-mom status work out in the long run. I found that my team was extremely understanding and accommodating. They made it clear that they wanted me to have a good maternity leave experience- I just had to tell them what I needed (since they had no clue). One unexpected benefit to being the first pregnant lady ever at a company was that I became instrumental in establishing the company-wide parental policies. I was asked to think about and present what my ideal maternity plan would be. It was very gratifying to know that I was contributing to the overall company culture in this way. As a bonus, it gave me more face time with our COO.Benefits and InsuranceEven if your startup is so small that it doesnt have private short-term disability insurance, you may still be able to access and benefit from it through state programs. I live and work in California, which has a state short-term disability insurance program that all tax-paying Californians can take advantage of. Below are a few pieces of advice for figuring out what benefits you have access toEach state has different laws and regulations regarding family and medical leave (FML). More often than not, details on FML programs can be found on state website. Some small companies (like startups) are not necessarily regulated by FML laws until they reach a certain size (like 50 employees). If you have an HR representative at your company, he or she will know the state laws as well as any company policies. If not, you can actually get really good information from your doctors. They are used to filling out all the necessary forms and can point you in the right direction.Talk to your health insurance provider and make sure you are clear on what is covered and what time-sensitive issues there are. Also make sure you understand when and how to enroll your baby on the health insurance plan once he or she is born. And talk to your health insurance about what services and supplies you can get for free through them. Do the y pay for birthing classes or lactation consultants? Will they give you a breast pump for free? Ask them for everything.Preparing for Your ReturnWho will need to take on some of your workload while you are gone on maternity leave? Find this person (or people) and do everything you can to come up with a workable solution. Especially when youre working with a small team in close quarters, you dont want to make people feel unduly burdened. In startups, more often than not, youll find that multiple team members will be taking on your responsibilities, and it helps if you can establish a clear list of tasks and responsibilities for each of them. In my case, my team found it helpful that I also drew out a timeline of obligations, deadlines, and milestones they would need to meet while I was on leave. I also had them shadow or work with me the two weeks before my maternity leave started.Be positive, and make it clear that you are committed to coming back to work. Talking about how you are going to need to arrange your schedule, day care, and lactation room needs makes it clear to your manager and co-workers that you have every intention of coming back and making it work. But go ahead and tell them that you want to come back part-time at first. Just tell them this. Make it a fact- even if youre not sure youll want or need to. Because you wont know what you will want or need until after your baby is born. When I came back to work full-time after months of being a mom full-time, I felt depressed and guilty. I wasnt useful to anyone. I told my manager, and we arranged for me to work part-time for a month. It would have been way easier if I had set that expectation in the beginning and not taken no for answer.Handling StressDealing with a newborn is the most stressful experience ever. Period. And any additional amount of bad news can make it feel like your world is simply coming apart at the seams and completely out of your control. But unfortunately, startup life is full of stress. In my case, a few months after coming back to work, I was laid off. We didnt get that next round of funding, and the bills were piling up. The only way to survive was to let people go. I understood, but it was still deeply upsetting. What I found important during that time, and the advice Id give anyone dealing with any kind of workplace stress, is to remind yourself that you are still you. You are still the talented and resourceful person who managed to deal with angry clients, or manage workplace politics, or find a job as you were in the past. You are just busier and more sleep deprived now, so you may need help. Find that help. Take all offers of help. Ask any and all friends and family to help out. Do whatever it takes to get what you and your new baby needs, including, if youre in my boat, time and peace to brush off your resume and go to a few interviews.Parting WordsAfter a short period of time, I did find a new job- a great job thats been nothing but positive and accommodating when it comes to me actively trying to maintain my work-life balance. And looking back over the whole experience, Ive realized that, no matter what situation youre in, becoming a mom takes bravery. You have to have courage to ask for and take what you need for yourself and your family. You will discover endurance in deep physical and mental places within you. I think I am now stronger, more understanding, and more sympathetic after becoming a mom. I am a new and better person, and a better professional, too. Why you should actually hold more grudges in life and your career
Why you should actually hold more grudges in life and your careerWhy you should actually hold more grudges in life and your careerWhen it comes to holding-gesellschaft grudges, I have everything going for me. First of all, I am a Scorpio which apparently means I am genetically predisposed to being mad at you (FOR YEARS) at even the slightest offense. I am also super sensitive so it is relatively easy to hurt my feelings, meaning a grudge isnt hard to come by. Im also a WASP which means I have been bred to hold on to anger for years and hide it neatly under my J.Crew cardigan and wash it down with a Pinot Grigio. To quote Angela from The Office, I dont back down. My sister and I used to be best friends. And we havent spoken in sixteen years, over some disagreement I dont even remember. So, yeah, Im pretty good. And though I havent shared this with many until now, I find that my grudges are a great source of energy (like spin class-level energy.) A grudge is my own personal invisible Gr een Lantern reif (though I imagine it would emit red light.) I hold on to it tightly until it becomes a part of my DNA. As the great Liane Moriarity wrote in Big Little Lies, They say its good to let yourgrudgesgo, but I dont know, Im quite fond of mygrudge. I tend it like a little pet.Now even though I do like my secret grudge fuel, I am ashamed of it at the same time. And I know that deep down that holding on to these feelings and letting them fester and then occasionally delivering a 10-minute alcohol-fueled monologuecalled Why I will never forgive (insert horrible persons name who done me wrong) to an unwilling audience, is not the way to handle them. But according to a new and excellent book called How to Hold a Grudge by Sophie Hannah, grudges actually have transformative powers in all aspects of your life and dont need to bring shame on you. When Hannah told people she was writing a book about grudges from a positive/self-help perspective some people poo-pooed it even going so far as to call it eccentric. But at the same time, many people called it brilliant. Those are clearly the people who also enjoy their grudges.A lot of people went, I love my grudges, they were clearly full of much more positive energy than the ones who turned their noses at ever having a grudge, Hannah said. I think how you react to this depends on whether youre willing to accept that you occasionally have negative feelings and everything isnt sweetness and light in a rainbow and daisies kind of way. I feel very honestly that it is quite hard to go through life and never have a grudge at all. I also dont think its desirable.Grudges can be very positiveWhen Hannah, a celebrated crime novelist from England, began researching the book she was surprised to find that there was nothing really written on the subject (unless you count How the Grinch Stole Christmas as a book about grudges.)I just couldnt believe that because they are such a common and psychological phenomenon. They are a r eally central part of the human experience like love and hate and forgiveness. All of these things there are hundreds of books about, she told Ladders.Hannah also pointed out that people who tend to be very detailed and aware of your surroundings tend to hold more grudges. After all, if you arent paying attention to the world around you, you arent going to notice when someone is doing a major injustice like borrowing your stapler and never returning it. But because you have a grudge story now you know not to lend that person your possessions.I argue in the book that holding grudges doesnt have to mean you are full of negative feelings. For me, holding a grudge in the right way enables me to get rid of negative feelings but not through having repressed them or denied them, Hannah said. If Gordon Gekko could say greed was good, then why cant the same be said of grudges?Grudges are an evolutionary toolHannah argues that a grudge should really be viewed and used as a tool to evolve as a person. You need to give yourself a grudge story and allow it to be a living thing. She suggests writing down the grudge. What happens is that by giving myself that permission or validation to hold a grudge which essentially means saying to myself That was not okay. That behavior was not acceptable and I am going to form a judgment in my mind about that behavior. Im going to create my grudge and Im going to use it to benefit me and protect me in any way that I can. And in doing that you create a commemorative symbolic grudge story, Hannah said. If you do that and honor your own experience and judgment in the situation then what you find is that the negative emotions dont feel the need to linger because it has been dealt with in a way that you feel is fair. You are now going to use it to improve your life. Theres nothing to feel bitter about.Since I started doing it really consciously my actual negative feelings in grudge situations are barely noticeable. Once you start doing that yo u are in the business of doing something creative and productive.Your grudges will become artifactsIt almost sounds counterintuitive but a grudge, if you hold and process it in the right way (follow the Grudge-fold path as she has labeled it), enables you to be more far more forgiving and less full of anger. But you have to take the proper steps in order to create the judge.Dont put pressure on your negative feelings to go. Consciously say to these feelings, I totally get why youre here and youre welcome to stay as long as you like. Make yourselves at home. Youve got every right to be here. Validate them and then they will stay as long as you want them too, Hannah added. Eventually, you are able to separate the intellectual feelings from the emotional ones. So often when we hate and resent people its because intellectually we havent fully processed the grudge itself.Grudges can actually be quite freeing and make you a better person. So what are the steps for processing your grudge?Bu ild a grudge cabinet. Write down the grudge (maybe in a Google doc) and then leave it alone. Let it be. Come back to it after a little time and really look at it and assess it. Literally, grade your grudge. What was the intention of the grudge? How mad did it make me? Like there are definitely differences between someone taking the last slice of pizza grudge and someone stealing credit for your work.Change the narrative. Ask yourself what you could have done differently in this situation? Then ask yourself if why the main reason you are angry is that you know you cant change what happened or is it because you regret not taking action at the moment.React. Here is the magic part. Because you have validated these feelings and not just repressed them, you can learn differently from them. For example, if you have a rude or mean coworker you know to expect that behavior and you in return may be the opposite of that person. You are going to be courteous and a team player. You can just have your grudge story ready so you are prepared. Once you expect it, it loses most of its power to upset you, she said. Women in Tech User Groups One of the biggest challenges in almost all industries today is achieving gender parity. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 mi llion construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-gr owing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive neuschpfung and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive ch ange for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the wor k can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.

4 Portfolio Projects for an Aspiring Web Designer
4 Portfolio Projects for an Aspiring Web Designer4 Portfolio Projects for an Aspiring Web DesignerYouve learned enough to start coding like a pro. The next step? Get hired. If you dont have any professional experience yet, it may seem difficult to build a portfolio. Fear not There are many different things you can add to your portfolio that you probably have made already or can build in almost no time. 1. The Ideal Website (For Your Brand) A simple project to start off with is to construct what your idea of an ideal website design would look like. This gives you the chance to showcase all of the range you have in one project. Sometimes this project could be considered your entire portfolio website design. There are many resources online that collect great portfolios so you can channel some inspiration. Feel free to explore and be creative. But be sure not to confuse with the katechese youre trying to convey. The goal is to be accessible and unique, not confusing. 2. Redesign a n Existing Template Take a popular site and redesign it. Simple enough, right? Its something you may have to do when you get a job, so you might as well start with it in your portfolio. This can demonstrate your range as a website designer as well as your ability to modify an existing idea to improve it for user consumption. Also, there are tons of different options you can choose from for your redesign. Deepina Kapila writes I once interviewed a self-taught developer who learned to code over the summer and had redesigned the New York Times website on his portfolio. It welches amazing. He thought through every detail how it looked on tablets and mobile phones, what the app experience was like, how comments and threading worked in his solution and lots more. It was the only project in his portfolio but of course it was so thorough and thoughtfully presented, it was all he needed to get the job. The other bonus to this project is that if you redesign a companys site, you may be abl e to approach the business later and sell the design. Or pick up a new job. Its a win-win. 3. Clone a Popular Site Some online coding courses have a project that requires you to clone an existing website. Its a great learning tool and not a bad thing to include in your portfolio. It may seem cliche and boring, but its a good learning experience. Moreover, it demonstrates that youre capable of building something just as good as the site you cloned. 4. Build a Small UI Piece A small UI feature, like a contact us form or a slideshow, is just as good as a website. It shows that youre able to handle small projects as well as large ones. Using a service like Codepen or GitHub make it simple to show viewers how you accomplished what you did. Conclusion While these four projects are great examples of what you can include in your portfolio, dont limit yourself to just these. Use your instincts and remember to tailor the portfolio youre making for what you want to accomplish full- time employment, freelancing, etc.

Promotion in Place
Promotion in PlacePromotion in PlaceSomeone who receives a vorrcken in place is in a scenario where the upgrade in employment comes withoutchanging jobs. The person in question receives a more prestigious job title, and frequently also gets the increased compensation that comes along with the new title, but remains in his or her current position, often with little or no adjustment to his or her job description or work duties. There are two common scenarios for promotions in place. Scenario Number One The company in question offers a variety of job titles that essentially are honorifics that recognize excellence or seniority, in plus-rechnen to the more traditional titles that roughly correspond to ones rank in the firms managerial hierarchy. For example, during this writers tenure at Merrill Lynch, the firm created a job title called Director that essentially welches a higher grade of Vice President. The Director title was granted in recognition of excellent performance over an e xtended period. No hard and fast parameters were set, but approximately 10 years as a Vice President seemed to be the unstated minimum before one could be considered a serious candidate for the Director title. Being promoted to Director did not necessarily denote leadership of a larger or more important organization that would be headed by someone with a Vice President title. Indeed, many of those named Directors managed relatively small staffs some, in fact, were essentially individual contributors with minimal supervisory responsibilities. Similarly, the vast majority of people who moved up from Assistant Vice President to Vice President did so while remaining in the same job, with the same responsibilities. One normally became eligible for this very common promotion in place after completing an unspecified number of years with the firm, and after receiving consistently high-performance reviews. Note, meanwhile, that persons hired from the outside who held Vice President or equiva lent titles with other firms typically would expect to receive a Vice President designation as a condition of hiring. At the old Western Electric division of ATT (later spun off as Lucent Technologies), this writer saw a similar system of recognition titles. In particular, non-engineering technical and professional staff general held the job title of Information Systems Staff Member (ISSM). A few long-serving employees were designated Information Systems Senior Staff Members (ISSSM). While these individuals typically had become important subject matter experts and showed leadership qualities among their peers, they nonetheless usually were not in formal supervisory positions of any sort. The loftier title, in fact, typically was the only outward distinction between their peers and them. Scenario Number Two The workgroup, department or organization in question has been upgraded in status, for any of a number of reasons. As a result, the head thereof may receive an upgraded job ti tle in consequence. This scenario is not nearly as common as the first, but it is seen from time to time. One situation in which you might see this variation is in the aftermath of a corporate merger. To harmonize job titles across the merged entities, certain people working in the acquired firm (or junior partner in the merger) might end up receiving apparently loftier titles while seeing nothing else change regarding their positions. Additionally, handing out fancier titles to those whose company has been acquired can be a way to soothe anxieties and paper over the fact that they actually have lost status.
